Punjab has one of the most vibrant cultures in the world. Punjabis are high spirited and liberal people who celebrate every event and festival with utmost zest.  Known for their heartwarming and hospitable nature, the people here truly believe in living life king size.

Punjab is called the land of five rivers – ‘punj’ means five and ‘ab’ means water.  Beas, Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi and Jhelum are the five rivers that flow in this land and divide it into three major parts called Doaba, Majha and Malwa.  The state gives the entire country a good harvest and you’ll surely find a number of agricultural fields blooming with sugarcane, maize, barley and other cereal crops.

Food

One of the favorite cuisines of Indians, Punjabi food is rich in flavors and spices. Whether you’re vegetarian or non-vegetarian, the state has a number of delectable dishes for all.

Makke di Roti (maize bread) and Sarson da Saag (mustard leaf curry) is traditional dish of Punjab.

The state has milk in abundance, and thus milk products are a part of everyday meals – buttermilk(Lassi) and curd being essentials.  There are many other foods like Chole Bhathure, Amritsari Kulcha, but one of the humongous favorites is Tandoori Chicken!

Women wear Salwar kameez (Salwar is the bottom wear and kameez upper).

Men wear a Turban with great pride. Initially, Hindus and Muslims also used to wear turbans, but now Sikhs can be only seen wearing them.

Kurta Pyjama is the traditional dress for Men in Punjab.

Footwear preferred is PunjabiJooti which has been the traditional footwear worn by men and women for many years.

Folk Music And Dance

Punjabi music is full of passion and exuberance. The true essence of the culture lies in its folk music.   It comprises simple instruments, such as dhol and dholak, played in sync with Punjabi boliyan (lyrics).  Bhangra is the most famous of all dance forms here, performed mainly by men.  This dance form began many years ago when Punjabi farmers used to perform to welcome the harvest season.  Giddha is another dance practiced mainly by Punjabi women. Kikli, Sammi, Jhumar are some other folk dances which you get to see here.

Festivals of Punjab

The high-spirited Punjabis celebrate every festival with vivacious energy. And it is during these times that you get to experience this amazing culture in its full glory. From dance and music to an assortment of delicious cuisines – you can witness all at once.
